Amy King’s new article and podcast on a future Chinese-led international order

Australia in the World podcast

What would a future Chinese-led international order look like? In a recently published exchange in the journal Security Studies, Amy King joined Darren Lim, John Ikenberry and Matthew Stephen to debate how we should think about China and the future of hegemonic international order.

In their 2023 article, “China and the Logic of Illiberal Hegemony”, Lim and Ikenberry offer a model of Chinese hegemonic order shaped by China’s domestic preferences, institutions and practices, and with significant potential “illiberal” outcomes for international order.

In her response piece, King contends that we need to pay much greater attention to the collective foundations of international order. While Lim and Ikenberry emphasise the liberal foundations of the post-WWII US-led order, King shows that this order has been shaped in fundamental ways by post-colonial, non-Western (so-called “illiberal”) states. This is true of other orders as well, from the Mughal Empire, to the Tributary order, to the post-Cold War East Asian order.

To continue the conversation, earlier this month Amy King joined Darren Lim for the latest episode of the Australia in the World Podcast. They unpacked their conceptions of order, discussed whether the post-Cold War order is really at an end, and considered the limitations and implications of China’s pluralist vision for international order.
